Anabolic steroid-related prostate cancer is often a silent and poorly diagnosed disease. It is believed to have an independent etiology from obesity,1,2 with some evidence that anabolic steroids may play a primary role in this disease.1,2 A few experimental animal models have shown that testosterone can induce a steroid-dependent tumor growth,12,13 an effect not associated with the presence of high levels of other anabolic hormones.14 The present study used a rat model of prostate cancer and an aetiologically relevant diet, as well as two common forms of anabolic steroids in the diet, triamcinolone and bicalutamide.
